Kindle vs Books

I´ve been thinking about this for a while now, not because I want a Kindle, no thank you, but because that´s what I do, I think 😉

My books are my passion, ever since I´ve been a wee lass, I LOVE reading. My dad was a school caretaker/janitor so I had free access to the school library and I spend ages in their. My dream of a perfect mishap would be accidentally being locked into a library over night or better still, over the weekend.

My husband, on the other side, does not like reading, never has and probably never will. I have tried to pass on my love for books to my boys, not quite sure if I have succeeded, sometimes it looks like it and at other times… nope. Then again, maybe one has to be female or slightly nuts like me?? Please do not take offence on the slightly nuts, this is a reference to me and me only. I´d probably prefer the written word to any kind of conversation anytime. I can dive into books, completely lose myself in them, ignoring my surroundings.
Mr CB, my eldest and I went for a “dry run” into a bigger town last year, dry run to figure out the route for my son who had to go there for his studies later on. Upon walking into the center of the town, we came past a book shop and I mean a proper, old fashion book shop. There was no stopping me :-). It was probably the size of my living room, cramped with book shelfs, a table in the middle, books piled up high on top of it – oh sweet heaven – I asked him if he had english books, too and he replied, “somewhere in here”. Well it took me two minutes flat to find the cardboard box full of English books and another 4 minutes to buy about 20 books – here´s to the little pleasures in live 🙂

Last year, Mr CB, my eldest and his girl-friend went to UK on a shopping spree, just for a weekend. Needless to say I painstakingly created a list of authors and book titles – an idiot guide really. When they came back, I greeted the bags they carried with more enthusiasm than them, sorry to say but it´s true, I was so exited, so full of anticipation so…. crab, holy sh…., they only managed to accidentally mistake two authors, I will never ever read these books, the ones the´ve proudly presented to me, they were so chuffed with themselves and I could have happily killed them.

Going back to the original title of the post: kindle vs books, a question MR CB asked me recently when I ordered another 20 or so books via Amazon, paying 2,48 Euro for the books and a mere 42,00 Euro on P&P.

To me, there is no question of buying a Kindle, ever, never, ever. I need the feel of the books, I need the slightly musty smell of the pages, I need to hear the sound of the pages turning, I need to be able to hug my books, I cherish the bookmarks my boys make for me, I love going through the old books I´ve got, re-reading them ever so often and although my books take up a lot of space, sometimes creating friction between the non-reading community of my family and me, (lack of space and so forth) – I will never ever back down on this one.
