Kindle vs Books

I´ve been thinking about this for a while now, not because I want a Kindle, no thank you, but because that´s what I do, I think 😉

My books are my passion, ever since I´ve been a wee lass, I LOVE reading. My dad was a school caretaker/janitor so I had free access to the school library and I spend ages in their. My dream of a perfect mishap would be accidentally being locked into a library over night or better still, over the weekend.

My husband, on the other side, does not like reading, never has and probably never will. I have tried to pass on my love for books to my boys, not quite sure if I have succeeded, sometimes it looks like it and at other times… nope. Then again, maybe one has to be female or slightly nuts like me?? Please do not take offence on the slightly nuts, this is a reference to me and me only. I´d probably prefer the written word to any kind of conversation anytime. I can dive into books, completely lose myself in them, ignoring my surroundings.
Mr CB, my eldest and I went for a “dry run” into a bigger town last year, dry run to figure out the route for my son who had to go there for his studies later on. Upon walking into the center of the town, we came past a book shop and I mean a proper, old fashion book shop. There was no stopping me :-). It was probably the size of my living room, cramped with book shelfs, a table in the middle, books piled up high on top of it – oh sweet heaven – I asked him if he had english books, too and he replied, “somewhere in here”. Well it took me two minutes flat to find the cardboard box full of English books and another 4 minutes to buy about 20 books – here´s to the little pleasures in live 🙂

Last year, Mr CB, my eldest and his girl-friend went to UK on a shopping spree, just for a weekend. Needless to say I painstakingly created a list of authors and book titles – an idiot guide really. When they came back, I greeted the bags they carried with more enthusiasm than them, sorry to say but it´s true, I was so exited, so full of anticipation so…. crab, holy sh…., they only managed to accidentally mistake two authors, I will never ever read these books, the ones the´ve proudly presented to me, they were so chuffed with themselves and I could have happily killed them.

Going back to the original title of the post: kindle vs books, a question MR CB asked me recently when I ordered another 20 or so books via Amazon, paying 2,48 Euro for the books and a mere 42,00 Euro on P&P.

To me, there is no question of buying a Kindle, ever, never, ever. I need the feel of the books, I need the slightly musty smell of the pages, I need to hear the sound of the pages turning, I need to be able to hug my books, I cherish the bookmarks my boys make for me, I love going through the old books I´ve got, re-reading them ever so often and although my books take up a lot of space, sometimes creating friction between the non-reading community of my family and me, (lack of space and so forth) – I will never ever back down on this one.

I am your average wife,mother,friend,employee....a bit lost in my world, a bit crazy at times but always good for a laugh - I think ;-)

Beautiful post. I, too, can read for eternity and so I share many of the sentiments in this post. The kindle is to books as a 3D cinema is to real life. The experience of the kindle is a fashion statement. Hopefully they won’t take off so much so that they stop printing books!

Thank you, I´d probably start a riot if anyone were seriously suggesting to stop printing books 😉

I relate well to that. I believe our collection is well over 1000, and the thought of putting it all on one tablet seems sacrilege. It would be damn handy at times, but what if the tablet was stolen or destroyed? My whole library gone!? No thanks. And when the reading tablets first came out you couldn’t highlight or make notes, which I do. It’s how I converse with the author, more meaningful if they are passed over.

Exactly, I think that every books tells a story, not just the one written, but also a story about it´s owners. But where do you keep over 1000 books??? I am seriously considering “chucking” out my kids to make room for my books 😉

I believe there are two types of people in this world regarding books – the kind who love to buy books and the kind who like to borrow books. I do not like to own books. Although I’m an avid reader, I would rather borrow a book from the library, read it, enjoy it, then take it back. Unless it’s a book for our homeschool library, then I buy it. All 3 kids will end up reading it. Worth the purchase. I think that’s why I enjoy my Kindle. I only download the free books. I don’t have stacks of books lying around. I don’t know. Maybe my logic is weird. 🙂

Not weird, just a different opinion. I love to re-read my books and I love the feel of the book in my hand. Additionally, I don´t think a Kindle would cherish being taken into the bath to be read, would it? 😉

I bought a Nook for my birthday this year… and I love reading even more so now. I love having instant access to hundreds of books in a light-weight device… I can read anywhere and even in the dark (without a light). I don’t have to worry about where to store them… and my favorite part… e-books cost HALF the price (and if not much less) than regular paper-back books.

I also found that I am reading much faster than I used to… a book that would take me a month to read, took me less than 2 weeks.

A few years ago I thought the idea of e-readers was silly… but now that I own one… total love.

true, admittedly, but somehow I can not see myself reeding a Nook on the loo – about the only place in the house I get to read in peace nowadays 😉

maybe I ought to try it, if anything to save on space because my cupboards are busting with books

I resisted a long time to get an e-reader, but when I had to pack box after box of books I haven’t touched in ages, I got the point…. The point further hit home when I found I have no place in my new place to store my books (no more office)….. I also like being able to slip 8gigs of books (near to 1000 books, give or take) into my purse =P
